The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical body horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
